Archive pages

These are the archive pages about the scheme, we've left them up for a while for information and because there is still a high level of interest in the project. The text is in the present tense - but the scheme is now closed to applications and appointments have been made.

We have left the application form 'up' on the site for a while for your interest. Several people have told us that working through the form has helped them clarify their dreams for a better world. Thanks for your interest.

What we looked for

We want people who share our values, who believe that they can make the world - or part of it – more just and more peaceful:  six visionaries who are convinced that change is possible. Are you one of them ? Do you know one of them ?

Do you have a vision?  Do you have a great idea and greater determination?  Do you have the skills and talent to make your vision a reality?

Qualities

The Visionaries for a Just and Peaceful World may not think of themselves as exceptional people but it is very likely that other people view them that way.

The Visionaries will need to possess an unusual set of qualities and skills to move from dreaming the dream of a better world to creating the reality.

We expect that they will have most of these qualities:-

Applications will be welcomed from people of all faiths and of none. The chosen Visionaries must feel comfortable working within the framework of the Trust's values system, which is drawn from the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). It is accepted that Visionaries may want to challenge conventional wisdoms.

Scope
We are looking for big ideas that address our key themes of Justice and Peace. We are open to original interpretations of these principles and do not wish to be too confined in our thinking.

However, we will need some persuading that ideas that are only about, for example, social business, housing, the arts, academic research etc fit the bill.

We are unlikely to support a vision that we believe should be funded from statutory sources or which makes a problem easier to live with, rather than tackling a root cause. We are also not able to support medical research or work within mainstream education.

Location
This scheme is available only to people who are normally resident in the United Kingdom or Republic of Ireland. This means that we will consider applications from non-Britons but that we would expect any Visionary to be resident in the UK or Ireland for at least the equivalent of 6 months of any and every year.

The sphere of work may be the whole world or a specific part of it. We will consider ideas that address an issue in a community but are unlikely to support those that do not have a much wider potential to change a greater part of the world.
